NiPS Lab participates at the LANDAUER Consortium Meeting in Lisbon



LANDAUER project Consortium meeting will be held in Lisbon on Oct. 7-8, 2014.

Igor Neri, Miquel Lopez, Davide Chiuchiù, Cristina Diamantini and Luca Gammaitoni (LANDAUER coordinator) participate to this meeting that sets the end of the second year of the project.

Started the V NiPS Summer school in Perugia



The fifth edition of NiPS Summer School devoted to "ICT-Energy: Energy management at micro and nanoscales for future ICT" is currently undergoing in Perugia.
The school is organized by the Noise in Physical System (NiPS) Laboratory of the University of Perugia and is divided into 3 specialized schools, through 5 days. In the first 3 days there will be common courses (General sessions). Day 4 and 5 are devoted to specialized courses under the 3 following parallel sessions:
- ICT-Energy summer school
- Landauer summer school
- PHIDIAS summer school
The school, supported by European Commission under the FET Proactive research project LANDAUER (, PHIDIAS ( and the Coordination Action ICT-Energy (, is open to graduate students, post-docs, young researchers, and in general to all scientists interested in the physical foundations and practical applications of energy management at micro and nanoscales in computing processes.

 The School is organized in Perugia (IT) during the same week of the international jazz festival Umbria Jazz 2014.


F. Cottone from NiPS at the 1st International Symposium on Energy Challenges and Mechanics


Francesco Cottone is invited speaker at the 1st International Symposium on Energy Challenges and Mechanics 8-10 July 2014,, Aberdeen, Scotland, United Kingdom.

Landauer project (EC FET Proactive) to be presented at the SIGMAPHI Statistical Physics conference in Rhodes

“Micro and Nano Energy Harvesting": NiPS lab got first on Soft-landing Porgramme Evaluation Result

The project “Micro and Nano Energy Harvesting” presented by NiPS Laboratory has been selected by the expert of Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation to be presented during the meeting on 22-26 June in Hong Kong.


Background of the Project:

The main goal of our work is the invention, design and prototipation of a new class of micro-powering systems for the energy consumption of stand-alone micro-electronic apparata like sensors or actuators. These powering systems are aimed at integrating/substituting the standard batteries even in electronic mobile devices of bigger dimensions. The principle of operation of these new micro-generators is based on the exploitation of energy present in the ambient (e.g. vibrations) and its conversion into electric power by using non-linear dynamics approach. The powering systems devised and prototyped by NipsLab can be used for all the stand-alone applications where a continuous energy supply is needed (wireless sensors…) and offer a good response in terms of dimension, duration, performance and environmental impact.

Traditional batteries cannot be used for micro-devices for their big dimensions and for the environmental pollution caused by the heavy metals and polluting elements with which they are made. In electronic apparata the traditional batteries offer a short-time duration and their performances decrease in time for the number of usage cycles.

Our powering systems can be well produced and scaled in micro-dimensions and are made mostly of recyclable or low polluting materials.
