LANDAUER Project consortium meeting in Paris

A consortium meeting of the European project LANDAUER ( will be held in Paris on June 11-12.
During the meeting the five laboratories that compose the consortium will present recent progeresses and discuss steps toward the end of the project in 2015.

Luca Gammaitoni, Director of NiPS Laboratory is visiting professor at the Universitè Pierre et Marie Curie, in Paris.
During his stay he will have scientific discussions with the components of the LIP6 computer science research laboratory  and carry on a scientific collaboration with the Systems On Chip (SOC) unit.

Cristina Diamantini, form NiPS Laboratory, University of Perugia, is visiting the Physics of Information Group in Lisbon.

Generalized Landauer Bound as Universal Thermodynamic Entropy in Continuous Phase Transitions

Location: Seminar Room (2.8.3), Physics Department, Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisbon. 
The classic Landauer bound can be lowered when erasure errors are permitted. Here we point out that continuous phase transitions characterized by an order parameter can also be viewed as information erasure by resetting a certain number of bits to a standard value. The information-theoretic expression for the generalized Landauer bound in terms of error probability implies thus a universal form for the thermodynamic entropy in the partially ordered phase. We explicitly show that the thermodynamic entropy as a function of interaction parameters and temperature is identical to the information-theoretic expression in terms of error probability alone in the specific example of the Hopfield neural network model of associative memory, a distributed information-processing system of many interacting stochastic bits. In this framework the Landauer bound sets a lower limit for the work associated with "remembering" rather than "forgetting".


This activity is part of the LANDAUER project.


F. Orfei and L. Gammaitoni visit the Hitachi Laboratory in Cambridge



Cambridge, Feb. 6th, 2015

Francesco Orfei and Luca Gammaitoni from NiPS visited the Hitachi Research Laboratory in Cambridge (UK).
During the visit the Hitachi Lab director, David Williams, presented the activities of the laboratory and discussed the participation of his laboratory to the ICT-Energy consortium, coordinated by NiPS.

Hitachi Cambridge, that is coordinating the "TOLOP" research project funded by FET,  is specifically interested in very low-power novel microprocessors.

Future collaborations between Hitachi Research and NiPS have been discussed.

L. Gammaitoni invited at the 'FET and Innovation' workshop



Brussels, Feb. 5th, 2015 

Luca Gammaitoni, NiPS Lab director participated at the  1-day workshop on 'FET and Innovation'.
The workshop is organized by the Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) unit of Directorate General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG CONNECT), and had place on 5 February 2015 on the premises of the European Commission at Avenue de Beaulieu, 25, Brussels.

The Future and Emerging Technologies programme invests in transformative frontier research with a high potential impact on technology, to benefit our economy and society. FET provides a unique combination of high risk, long term, multidisciplinary and collaborative frontier research, which lays the foundations for radically new technologies. Innovation out of FET research is what can make a difference between having the best research and doing something useful with it, something that people will embrace, that will improve society and create better lives for all.

The workshop aimed at identifying ecosystems that can stimulate innovation from FET type of research and the actions necessary to put the ecosystems in place, identifying notably the ones that may need support at the European level. 

During the workshop Gammaitoni advanced the need to find a proper funding instrument to fill the gap between FET funded research (challenging, high-risk, long-term) and main stream ICT funded programs that aims at short-term results. "We need to find a way to bridge the gap between proof-of-concept results, produced by the best FET projects, and products that are the declared objective of main stream ICT research", declared Gammaitoni that is coordinating the C.A. ICT-Energy where more 50 groups are represented.
